What is the difference between Passive tags and Active tags?

There is two types of RFID Tag such as “with battery” type and “without battery type”

Passive tag: it is called as “Passive RF Tag”, “Passive RFID”, or “Passive Tag”. It has no battery inside and is operated by the external wireless power source such as Reader Writer.
Although the communication distance is short, the cost is low and it is adaptable to the demand for smaller and thinner size and can be used semi permanently as long as it will not be collapsed. Therefore, the application field will be expanded from now on, too.
(All of our RFID tag products are the passive type. ⇒ Please refer to the product page.)
Active tag: it is called as “Active RF Tag”, “Active RFID”, or “Active tag”.
It has the battery inside and can make the wireless communication. It is suitable for the long ranged wireless communication so that several tens of meters communication is possible.

However, there is the such disadvantages as higher cost than passive tag and replacement cost due to the consumed battery.
It is made to adapt to the various bandwidth such as Micro wave (2.45GHz) ,UHF-band, and so on.

Other than above, there is the active type. It has a battery and has both passive and active functions, which is its distinctive feature. Usually it functions as a passive tag, but when it receives a signal from a reader, it starts using an internal battery. Therefore, there is an advantage of consuming less battery power than the active tag.
