Differences between NFC and Felica

NFC and Felica are used for cashless payment, such as the electronic money, transportation IC cards, and etc, as the payment is made by simply holding it up to the device, and the technology is actively and naturally used in everyday life. Although they are often confused as NFC and Felica are the same because they are used in similar ways, but there are distinct differences between them.
NFC, Near Field Communication, is one of the near-field wireless communication standards. It uses 13.56MHz and has wireless communication at a distance of 2- 10cm. NFC was jointly developed in 2003 by Sony and Philips and is certified by the international standard ISO/IEC IS 18092. It has higher global compatibility and usability, and its functional features are noticed.
NFC standards are TypeA, TypeB, TypeC, which is Felica, and ISO15693.
In Japan, TypeA is used for Taspo, and TypeB is for my number cards and passports. IISO15693 has a longer communication range compared to other types, and it is used for RF tags, which are mainly used in logistics.

On the other hand, Felica is called TypeF, and it is based on NFC with adding the security structure developed by Sony and improved communication speed. Therefore, one of the NFC standards is Felica.
TypeA and TypeB are a mainstream globally, but Felica:TypeF is a mainstream in Japan and used only in limited areas in Asian countries and Japan.

FeliCa is, highly developed for the Japanese market but isolated from the global market, used in many cases, such as cashless payment, electronic money, transportation cards, card keys to offices, employee IDs, airline tickets, official application, home appliances, and etc, because of its processing speed.
Also personal information in the card or electronic money is protected by higher security, and they are recreated when communication cryptographic key is mutually authenticated, so it prevents from unauthorized access and identity theft. This is one of the reasons why it is widely used.
